The castle was built between 1395 and 1406 by Bartolino da Novara. Almost sixty years later it was transformed into a Renaissance palace and it is here that most celebrated room of the complex, the Camera degli sposi (Bridal Chamber), masterpiece of Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506), is housed.
The Chamber of the Spouses, frescoed between 1465 and 1474 for Ludovico II Gonzaga and his wife Barbara of Brandenburg, is totally decorated, from the floor to the ceiling. The two walls in the shade are decorated with imitation hangings of leather, while the other two and the vault are covered with frescoes. On the wall above the fireplace, the marquis Ludovico is seated alongside with his wife Barbara and around them the children and a crowd of courtiers. On the right wall, the marquis is portrayed along with his second son, Cardinal Francesco Gonzag, other relatives, few famous people (King Christian I of Denmark and the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III of Habsburg), horses and dogs. On the vault, at the centre, a daring aerial perspective, with a circular balustrade from which girls and putti peer.
